Laser Dentistry at Advanced Periodontics & Implants

Dr. Jodhan with two lasers

Dr. Jodhan is an early adopter and a big believer in using laser technology to improve patient outcomes. She is one of a handful of Chicago dentists who is certified to offer LANAP laser therary: a clinically proven alternative to perio surgery.

If a patient has an existing dental implant that is in the danger of failing due to inflammation (peri-implantitis), she uses LAPIP to clear the infection while retaining structural tissue integrity. Studies indicate that 94% of failing implants can be saved and reintegrated.

LPD or Laser Pocket Disinfection is a non-surgical enhancement of your regular perio maintenance which can be performed by a trained dental hygienist.

LANAP: Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure

LANAP is an FDA-cleared alternative to conventional periodontal surgery performed with a special Nd:YAG laser. It can target inflammation without damaging any healthy gum tissue. This treatment results in true periodontal regeneration, new bone growth and decreased pocket depth.

Clinical results demonstrate a 50% reduction in pocket depth for 90% of LANAP patients without the need for cutting and removal of healthy tissue. Some of the main benefits of LANAP are: minimal recession & post-operative discomfort, minimal tooth sensitivity and black triangles between teeth (which occur with traditional periodontal surgery).

Nd:YAG laser light is absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin, but passes through un-inflamed tissues. It can thus reach underneath the surface to kill bacteria and seal the site for regeneration.

Example of LANAP treatment

A patient (46) came into our office with the chief complaint of halitosis (bad breath). He had not seen a dentist in over 10 years. He was a smoker with poor home oral care. During initial examination, thge patient presented with dense tenacious calculus and serious inflammation of the gums. Pocket depths exceeded 6mm throughout.

Full-mouth LANAP protocol was performed. One tooth had to be extracted. The patient did not report significant pain post-operatively. Within three weeks, most of the inflammation was resolved with little to no recession. Maintenance visits every three months showed continual healing with reduced pocket depths.

The patient is satisfied with his improved gum health and cessation of halitosis. We continue to follow up and monitor progress. A single implant has been restored, to replace the missing tooth.

LAPIP: Laser-Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure

LAPIP is a laser treatment of gum tissue that surrounds an implant in danger of failing. It targets diseased tissue only to help an implant reintegrate in the pocket. Clinical studies demonstrate 94% success rate.

Example of LAPIP treatment

A patient (45) was referred for an infection around dental implant #10 that was six years old at that point. During initial examination, we noted overall poor oral health care with heavy bleeding upon probing around #10. The probing depths were 7-10mm.

The patient chose the LAPIP protocol we recommended with the goal of stabilizing the implant, rather than removing it. The crown was not removed either, due to potential for increased trauma.

The patient did improve his oral health and started using Waterpik. During our follow-ups we saw probing depths significantly reduced to 3-4mm without bleeding or suppuration. The patient is very happy with the outcome and the minimal pain & discomfort he had throughout the treatment.
